Love, sex and playlists for all!
A special Valentine to you from Janet Jackson, the Art of Noise and more croonin' heartthrobs courtesy of Soul Clap
So get a couple of white Jewish kids just out of college, and give them an uncanny talent for mixing funk, jazz and hip hop; then give them that intangible instinct of knowing how to DJ, how to play off the energy of the crowd; dress them in the latest from Newbury Street’s Stel's (www.stelsinc.com)--a favorite boutique of theirs, and ours--and let them loose at parties and clubs, let them arrange their own special events, let them put together a special big-wet-kiss of a Valentine’s Day mix made especially for us (thank you thank you). Do all that, and you have Soul Clap, the brainchild of Eli Goldstein and Charles Levine.
The two funkalicious buddies met in high school. Eli lived in Cambridge, Charles in Brookline, and they shared a love for hip hop and funk. They began mixing together before Eli went off to Tufts and Charles to Claremont, but they hooked up again a few years later and realized they shared a vision: to create original music, to DJ and to entertain, entertain, entertain. They’re high-energy and devoted to vinyl, often working four turntables at once and sometimes bringing live musicians into the mix. They’ve been a hit at high-profile parties at the Liberty Hotel and the Intercontinental Hotel and at events sponsored by Bacardi and Grey Goose. They also host their own regular events: Wednesday night mid-week techno at Phoenix Landing, Thursday classic party music at Red Line in Harvard Square, and once a month on a Tuesday night it’s the Yo Yo Yo nineties dance jam at Middlesex. Summers they bring you dancing on the Charles, and New Year’s Eve they were a big hit for First Night in near-zero weather in Copley Square. Whew. And they’ve got a new record coming out—vinyl, of course—called “Puppy Crack” on AirDrop Records (www.airdrop.com). And, yay, they’ve put together a special Valentine’s mix just for Boldfacers, bringing, they say, funk and romance together just for us—and that includes you, dear reader, and you and you and you. We love it! We love them!
A little bit about the lads: Both are single, and eligible. Both say they come from terrifically supportive families. Eli’s dad, Gary, was a Chicago jazz musician and loves his son’s musical streak. Charles’ mom, Susan, is totally pro Soul Clap and subscribes to their podcast. They’ve done their thing internationally and hope to DJ in Tel Aviv. As for the Jewish thing? The heritage is all about dancing and celebration; being a DJ just makes sense.
They’ve been working together full-time for five years and hope to keep doing the same. They want to travel more. They want to DJ around the world. And they want this Valentine’s Day to be filled with love, heart, big soul, soul claps, and funk. Can’t do without the funk.
